WILSONS PROMONTORY NATIONAL PARK

Spectacular coastal beauty, iconic Aussie wildlife, kilometres of white sandy beaches, rocky lookouts and native vegetation, some that is unique and rare. Welcome to Southern Victoria’s best kept secret.

Overview

Wilsons Promontory National Park, or ‘The Prom’ as we call it, offers sweeping views from ancient granite topped hills, across rugged coastline and deep blue sea. The park is forested in distinct native flora: ti trees, banksias, eucalypts and grass trees. In spring, tiny orchids of great variety appear. Such vegetation supports an abundance of native wildlife. You’ll be greeted by brightly coloured crimson rosellas. Kangaroos and emus are easily seen. Wallabies, wombats and, in season, echidnas might also be spotted.

Tooradin and Mangroves

Our first stop is at Tooradin, the location of the world’s southernmost mangrove system. Mangrove are a most fascinating tree, with aerial roots that help the plant breathe in its muddy, soggy home. Fish and crustaceans use the mangrove’s root-mass as a protective nursery for raising their young.

Prom Adventure

As soon as we enter the national park, we start looking for native wildlife—kangaroos and emus are common. We’ll provide you with the best photographic opportunities— some in places very few people go to. There are beach strolls, rock rambles and views in abundance. In spring, the scent of native flora adds to the mix. We will also share the story of Loo-errn, the Aboriginal protector of this place.

Fish Creek Wine, Dine, Rest

After your big coastal adventure, you’ll relax and share tales over a wine or three at the Fish Creek pub—which is also your accommodation for the night.

Walkerville

Walkerville Beach is a small coastal region of rock pools and marine life. We will visit nearby Cape Liptrap Lighthouse, which offers dramatic coastal views to The Prom and across Bass Strait.

Bald Hills Wetland Reserve

Set within a natural wetland system of state significance, the reserve offers fabulous wader-bird watching.

Optional Extension—3 Day Tour

Southern Secrets offers an optional extra so you can enjoy a full day at Wilsons Promontory. This gives you the opportunity to do some hiking or sun bathing.

Penguin Parade

On the final day of this optional extra, we visit the Penguin Parade at Philip Island. Here you will watch hundreds of little penguins return home after a day’s fishing many kilometres out at sea. The little penguin is Australia’s only penguin and Phillip Island is home to the largest little penguin colony in the world.
